Visual Media Production

Aarhus University

This is a hands-on, learning-by-doing production course, in which participants will make two short fiction films with guidance and feedback at every stage of the creative process. The main focus is on storytelling though production values will of course also count.

Students will work in teams, with generally five participants per group, and in addition to learning basic principles of script development, will gain experience with such tasks as casting, location scouting, directing actors, camera work, lighting, sound recording, editing, etc.

There will be instruction in the use of our semi–professional cameras and editing program, and no previous experience with production equipment is necessary.

After a few introductory lectures, the course will consist primarily of group work with feedback from the teacher and professional filmmakers. The exam consists of the productions you make during the course and a report of 6-8 pages per participant.

The few required readings will be supplied electronically as a compendium of brief relevant articles.

The first class meeting will be held on July 15th and the last one on August 9th. Between those dates, there will be work virtually every day. The reports will be due on August 16th but will be sent as electronic files and participants in the course will not have to remain in Aarhus after August 9th.
