Russian Language and Culture
Ural Federal University
The program is designed for anyone interested in Russia, the Russian language, history, culture and mentality. Take part can, as those who already know the Russian language, as well as those who have never studied it. The program bases on the fact that any language is not just a set of rules and exceptions, but a code or algorithm for determining the logic of behavior for a group or community of people. In this sense, the native language is a key sign of identification. Often people, who are interested in a certain country or group of countries, begin their study with language. According to this Program students will understand the language itself by learning environment of its formation, the mentality and traditions of its speakers.
Module 1. Language practice
The goals for the language program include development of the following: mastery of the alphabet, basic vocabulary and of the forms and syntax essential for reading and oral comprehension. We dedicate time to development of listening comprehension in every class. Elementary writing skills are taught at this course as well.
Furthermore, students are taught vocabulary, forms, and syntax through the original texts. In assessing the beginning student’s knowledge, a number of instruments are used. These include quizzes (both written and oral), homework, tests, class participation/response, in‐class writing exercises.
For the students not to get overwhelmed with “pile” of new knowledge our teachers use different methods and class formats such as multimedia and video linguistic content, singing songs, word games, open-air classes, city tours and many others.
Module 2. Russian culture
So many stereotypes and empty rumors exist in the world about Russia. At this course we mythbust and change minds. Russian culture has a long and rich history, steeped in literature, ballet, painting and classical music.
During this module, our students get involved into this colorful breathtaking world. Traditions, holidays, life in Russia, media, outstanding people and events influenced the world – all of these you will learn at the course. Here classes have 2 formats: in-class activity and open-air classes, where we have an opportunity to visit with teacher some sightseeing in Yekaterinburg.
For those students interested in business and industry in Russia we prepared an extra lectures if need be.
