Digital humanities in theory and practice

This Bordeaux Summer School is open to graduate and doctoral students as well as post-doctoral fellows and researchers with an interest in law, computer science, social and human sciences.
The programme will introduce participants to the highly innovative and dynamic scientific field of digital legal humanities, with a focus on how these methods are implemented in law, political science, economics and history.
This summer school will provide participants with:
- An overview of the scientific possibilities of digital humanities;
- Knowledge of this particular disciplinary field (definitions, concepts and methods), and the fundamental concepts of statistics used in this context;
- An understanding of the methodological and epistemological challenges related to digital humanities, and in particular the legal aspects;
- A practical training session for the use of the TULIP software, an information visualisation framework dedicated to the analysis and visualisation of relational data developed at the 'Bordeaux Computer Science Research Laboratory - LaBRI' of the University of Bordeaux for more than 20 years;
- A first approach of the R and Python computer languages;
- An introduction to the theory of biases in social and human sciences, as well as to the techniques and methods of empirical legal studies and digital legal history.

Entry
requirements: The course is designed for graduate and doctoral students as well as post-doctoral fellows and researchers with an interest in law, computer science, social and human sciences. Classes are conducted in English. Candidates should have a B2 level of English or equivalent. Candidates must provide a CV and cover letter detailing their scientific interest in digital humanities applied to law. Preference will be given to candidates explaining the need they have to use digital humanities in the context of their research work. |
